Blues Trottoir is a French musical duo formed in 1987 by Clémence Lhomme (vocalist, born February 25, 1965) and Olivier Defays (saxophonist, born April 29, 1965, son of actor Pierre Richard). They are best known for their jazz-pop hit Un soir de pluie, which reached No. 6 on the French Top 50 in November 1987 and sold over 450,000 copies. Written by Clémence Lhomme and composed by Jacques Davidovici, the song blends a melancholic voice with a jazzy saxophone. Originally intended in English (Old New York Town), it was recorded in French at Davidovici’s suggestion.
Their debut album, Histoires courtes, was released in 1989, recorded in New York with American musicians like Bette Sussman and Bashiri Johnson. It earned them the Artist of the Year award at Midem 1989, alongside Vanessa Paradis. However, their follow-up single Poker flopped, and 24 jours explosifs (1989) was banned from airplay due to the Gulf War.
Despite a four-year tour, disagreements with their label EMI led to the duo’s split in the early 1990s. Clémence Lhomme pursued a solo career, releasing Pigeon vole (1994) and earning a nomination at the 1995 Victoires de la Musique. She continued collaborating with Olivier Defays on her solo projects. The duo reunited in 2016, announced on the TV show Les Années bonheur.
Blues Trottoir remains a quintessential 1980s French “one-hit wonder,” defined by the jazzy elegance and nostalgia of their signature hit.
