The Noise - September 1998 (issue #184)
Mutate
The disc certainly lives up to its name. It's a strange mutation of styles and textures not often heard these days although Pink Floyd sold millions of records doing the same thing. The first song, "Convulsions," sets the tone with its something-wicked-this-way-comes prelude to the next song, "Absolution." There's lots of crunchy guitars and a few wanking solos that make you wonder if they are trying to be metal, but then you hear a song like "Despondent" with its bluesy, whiskey-soaked and cigarette smoke ambience and realize that Rumble are taking you for a crazy ride whose destination is unknown. On one hand, it's a great idea because you could be in for some fun surprises. On the other hand, it's a little frustrating not knowing what's going to come next. You will be taken on a "Powertrip" where the singer shares his conspiracy theories with a bunch of like-minded folk who may or may not be listening but they all agree that he sounds just like Tom Araya of Slayer (who also has a tendency to rant and rave about his own conspiracy theories. At first, I was a little frustrated as I listened to this CD. It throws together heaping portions of riff-rock, hardcore, '70s acid rock, metal and a tiny helping of rap into a blender and purees them until they become one thick glass of discolored musical mucous with no name. So call it what you want, but you'll probably want a second serving because the taste is out of this world. (J. Lianna Ness)
