Conçu comme un opéra-rock inspiré par The Who et diverses comédies musicales, ce projet est né après le vol des bandes originales de l'album initialement prévu, Cigarettes and Valentines. Le récit suit les errances de « Jesus of Suburbia », un anti-héros créé par Billie Joe Armstrong.
L'opus a rencontré un succès planétaire, se classant en tête des charts dans 19 pays et s'écoulant à plus de 14 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde.
