Obeisant (born Sebastian Gawlik) is a drum and bass producer, DJ, mixing and mastering engineer, and educator from Hamilton, New Zealand, known for his moody, raw textures and groove-driven rhythms rooted in dark techstep traditions. He began producing electronic music as a teenager approximately 12 years before his professional debut, initially experimenting with various genres including dubstep, electro, and house before focusing exclusively on drum and bass. Obeisant's breakthrough came in 2016 when he was discovered by Critical Music founder Kasra through a connection with producer and blogger Resound, leading to his debut release on the prestigious Critical Music Binary series with the four-track EP Binary Vol. 9, featuring the tracks Dreamcatcher, Bass Drop, On My Mind, and Twilight.
Following his successful debut, Obeisant has continued to develop his signature dark, technical sound, releasing music on respected labels including Renegade Hardware, Locked Concept, and Darkfloor Sound. His production style draws heavily from his musical influences outside of drum and bass, particularly 90s grunge rock, progressive rock bands like Tool, 90s hip-hop, and electronica, which inform the intensity and high tension that characterize his sound. With over 20 years of experience in music production, Obeisant has established himself as both a recording artist and a skilled mixing and mastering engineer, offering his technical expertise to other artists while continuing to release his own material and perform as a DJ internationally.
