Diane Charlemagne (22 February 1964 – 28 October 2015) was a British jazz, soul, funk, and electronic dance music singer and songwriter from Manchester, England. She began her career as lead vocalist for 1980s funk band 52nd Street, replacing Beverley McDonald in 1984. In 1990, the band re-emerged as Cool Down Zone, with Charlemagne providing vocals and writing credits on all ten songs of their album New Direction. She later became lead vocalist for Urban Cookie Collective, achieving two UK Top 10 hits in the 1990s with "The Key, The Secret" and "Feels Like Heaven".
Charlemagne's most iconic contribution came with her unforgettable vocals on Goldie's "Inner City Life," establishing it as one of the most celebrated drum and bass tracks of its era, and she was the primary voice on his landmark album Timeless. Beyond her work with Goldie, she collaborated extensively with dance music producers under the pseudonym D'Empress, working with house veterans Satoshi Tomiie and Joey Negro, as well as drum and bass artists and performing live with Moby during his Play tour in the early 2000s. She also worked with artists including 4Hero and Doc Scott, cementing her legacy as one of the most versatile and influential voices in British electronic music until her passing in 2015.
