Artist BiographyAvailable in:

Mariah the Scientist, born Mariah Amani Buckles on October 27, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American contemporary R&B, alternative, and soul singer-songwriter. Raised in an environment fostering intellectual and creative pursuits, she excelled academically, graduating from Southwest DeKalb High School a year early. She earned a scholarship to study biology at St. John’s University in New York, aiming to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, but left in 2018 to pursue music full-time.
Inspired by classic R&B, she began writing songs and released her debut EP, To Die For, on SoundCloud in 2018, gaining early traction. In 2019, she signed with One Umbrella (Tory Lanez’s label, who became her mentor) and RCA Records, releasing her debut album, Master. The project, featuring singles like “Beetlejuice” and “Reminders,” was praised for its personal, melancholic storytelling. In 2021, her sophomore album, Ry Ry World, peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, earning acclaim from NPR and Pitchfork for its vivid storytelling and introspective themes of love and toxic relationships. That same year, she released the EP Buckles Laboratories Presents: The Intermission.
In 2023, she parted ways with RCA and One Umbrella, signing with Epic Records. Her third album, To Be Eaten Alive (2024), preceded by singles “From a Woman” (a response to Young Thug’s “From a Man”) and “Bout Mine,” marked her Billboard 200 debut. She has performed at major festivals like Coachella, Pitchfork, and Rolling Loud and toured with artists like Tory Lanez. In 2024, she faced a misdemeanor battery charge following an altercation at an Atlanta nightclub but continues her rise in the R&B scene. Known for her graceful voice and theatrical narratives about love, Mariah is a rising star with an estimated net worth of $2 million in 2024.
