Chantay Renee Savage, born July 16, 1971, in Chicago, is an American R&B and dance singer, songwriter, and musician. Raised by a jazz musician father, she was influenced by Sarah Vaughn, Chaka Khan, and Marvin Gaye. Before her solo career, she worked as a session musician and co-wrote songs, including CeCe Peniston’s hit “We Got a Love Thang.”
Her 1993 debut album, Here We Go..., featured the singles “If You Believe” and “Betcha’ll Never Find,” the latter reaching the top 20 on R&B and dance charts. In 1996, her cover of “I Will Survive” became a hit, peaking at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 on R&B, and #12 on the UK Singles Chart, earning gold certification. In 1997, she performed in a Janet Jackson tribute at the Soul Train Music Awards. In 1998, she collaborated with Common on “Reminding Me (Of Sef),” a top 10 Hot Rap hit. Her 1999 album This Time included “Come Around” (#62), with Savage writing all lyrics and playing piano and drums. In 2003, she worked with poet Malik Yusef on “Auto-Eroticism.”
Her singles have spent 452 weeks on various Billboard charts, and her albums, 81 weeks. Still active, she released remixes like “Still” (Masaki Morii Remixes) in 2025.
