Artist Biography

Born in Rome on February 5, 1956. In the mid-70s he became part of the Roman jazz world where, together with the musicians of his generation, he began to perform in the clubs of the capital. Later he took part in the formations of Roberto Gatto and Maurizio Giammarco, a sort of prelude to "Lingomania" the historic group founded by Giammarco in whose formation the following alternated: Flavio Boltro, Furio Di Castri, Enzo Pietropaoli, Danilo Rea, Roberto Gatto, with which Umberto has had the opportunity to play in many concerts in Italy and abroad.
Since 1988 he has formed various organic leaders in which the following have played: Stefano Sastro, Luca Pirozzi, Stefano D'Anna, Massimo Manzi , Enzo Pietropaoli, John Arnold, Francesco Puglisi, Ramberto Ciammarughi, Dario Deidda, Fabrizio Sferra, Gianluca Renzi, Alberto D 'Anna. Many collaborations and concerts with various artists including: Paolo Fresu , Palle Daniellson, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Albert Mangelsdorff, Bruno Tommaso. He has repeatedly obtained awards as the best Italian jazz guitarist in the referendums of the readers of the sector magazines (Chitarre, Guitar Club) and with Lingomania, as the best Italian group, in those of the specialized critics (Jazz Music).
He has played in numerous international festivals: Rome, Milan, Ravenna, Atina, Berchidda, Sant'Anna Arresi, Roccella Ionica, San Remo, Umbria Jazz, Vicenza, Montpellier, North Carolina, Dakar etc. He has recorded four CDs as a soloist: "Inside colors" (gala), "Ulisse" (brave art), "Things to come" (brave art), "Alice" (brave art).
As a teacher he has published three video-methods: "Improvisation", "Technique" (Capital video), "Techniques for improvisation" (Play game), two books: "Scale!" (New Carisch) and "The Jazz Guitar" (New Carisch). He is one of the founders of "Percentomusica", a Roman teaching structure in which he held the position of President for two years.
