Tarrasque was formed in Portsmouth, UK, in 1988. They were essentially a thrash metal band comprising Dave Ware (drums), Alan Carson (bass), Steve Harsley (guitar), Wak (guitar) and Rich Stevens (vocals). They released three demos, played many gigs, were referred to by Morat of Kerrang! as "the best unsigned thrash band I've seen this year", and caught the attention of MTV's Vanessa Warwick. This led to their second demo - The Re-awakening - being played as background music on MTV, being filmed for MTV at The Bulldog Bash and being asked to write a new theme tune for MTV. It was around this time - approx 1992 - that Tarrasque were offered a recording contract around the same time as the Bulldog Bash. It was sent to the Musicians' Union for vetting and their advice was not to sign. Dave Ware thinks it was an American company. In early 1993, Dave Ware and Al Carson left the band and were replaced by Paul Nicholas (drums). Rich Stevens then played bass as well as lead vocals, making Tarrasque a 4-piece band. During 1993, their CD - titled 'Eggshell Staircase' - was released. The band were also offered a recording contract that year which they decided not to sign as it had several dodgy loopholes. Steve Harsley's last gig was on New Year's Eve 1993 and, after that, Tarrasque disbanded.
