Cat Rapes Dog is a pioneering Swedish electronic band formed in 1984 by Joel Rydström and Magnus Fransson. Emerging as one of the first EBM (Electronic Body Music) acts in Scandinavia, the duo initially gained a cult following through self-released cassette tapes. Their sound was a unique abrasive blend of punk attitude, sarcastic lyrics, and industrial textures, a style they referred to as "cyberpunk" long before it became a mainstream commercial buzzword.
Between 1989 and 1991, the band gained international notoriety after signing with the Belgian label KK Records, placing them alongside industrial heavyweights like Front Line Assembly. During this era, they released quintessential albums such as Maximum Overdrive and God, Guns & Gasoline. In 1995, founding vocalist Joel Rydström departed and was replaced by John Wreibo Lindqwister, ushering in a shift toward a more metal-influenced sound on albums like Biodegradable.
After a period of dormancy following their 2009 appearance at Wave-Gotik-Treffen, the band officially reunited in late 2018. They made a successful live return in 2019 and have remained active in the 2020s, with their classic catalog receiving extensive remasters and vinyl reissues via labels like Energy Rekords and Artoffact Records.
