The portrait of a woman (in neglected dress), presented here, painted by Bernardo Strozzi around 1630, is that of a viola da gamba player who, therefore, does not seem, a priori , to be able to be Barbara Strozzi. Moreover, on the date indicated she was only eleven years old).
Career :
In addition to the Accademia dei Incogniti founded by the writer Giovan Francesco Loredan , Giulio Strozzi created the Accademia degli Unisoni (1637-1638), an exhibition of intellectuals and musicians, in part to give his daughter the opportunity to sing during academic debates . In 1638, the academy published a record of the meetings ( Le Veglie de 'Signori Unisoni ), in which it first appeared under the name "Barbara Strozzi". The beauty and talent of her adopted daughter ensure its success. Intelligent and quick-witted, she chairs the meetings and determines the topics to be debated during evening.
Alongside the laudatory reviews of the Veglie , a series of satirical texts, signed L'Incognito , circulated in Venice. The texts mock the poetic talents of the father and question the virtue of the daughter.
In 1644, she published her first book of madrigals on texts by her father, like many of his works. This collection is dedicated to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany . A second publication follows in 1651, a collection of cantatas , ariettes and duets ; this collection notably includes the cantata composed in honor of the marriage of Emperor Ferdinand III of Habsburg and Eleonore of Mantua .
She continues to publish after the death of her father. His third publication, dated 1654, includes cantatas and ariettes for one, two and three voices. Its fourth publication is lost. His only work of sacred music arrived in 1655. His last books were published in 1657, 1659 and 1664.
She composed many vocal works for patrons, such as the Doge of Venice Nicolò Sagredo , Ferdinand III of Habsburg and Éléonore de Nevers-Mantoue , or Sophie of Bohemia , Duchess of Brunswick .
Until 1664, she published 125 works out of eight opuses, madrigals and especially arias and cantatas .
