Artist Biography

Members : La Chapelle Royale, La Petite Bande, Les Arts Florissants.
Robert Claire was born in Chicago, where he began studying saxophone and flute with Ben Bailey. He later attended UC Berkeley, where he received Bachelor's degrees in both Music and French. While there, he played saxophone and flute as a member of a jazz quintet led by vibraphonist Lee Schipper, performing the first-ever jazz concerts in Hertz Hall. The quintet later went on to win the National Collegiate Jazz Competiton at Notre Dame College in 1967, where Mr. Claire was voted most promising reed player by the Jury which included Herbie Hancock. As a result, the quintet was selected for a two-month tour of Africa for the US Department of State. He then free-lanced in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in the early 70's taught Jazz Harmony, Jazz Arranging and Jazz Ensemble at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Beginning to concentrate on flute, he studied with Mr. Merrill Jordan, previously of the Philadelphia Orchestra and then the San Francisco Symphony. During this period I have played with many local classical groups such the Oakland Ballet, San Francisco Spring Opera and performed in many chamber music concert settings. His interest narrowed further as he began to focus on 18th century music for the flute, which led him to perform on exact copies of instruments of the period. Such instruments being difficult to obtain at the time, he began to build his own copies of museum instruments with the help of his brother Ted, who had a wood / metal shop. Thereafter, I have played principally on instruments of his own construction. His activity on Baroque flute led him to be awarded the Alfred Hertz Memorial Traveling Fellowship in 1976 from UCB, which he used to spend a year studying with Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague in 1977. Returning to the US while continuing to perform occassionally in Europe, he finally moved to France in 1980. He was to stay there for the next 7 years. During that time he performed on over 20 CDs and toured throughout Europe with many of the finest early music groups there, including La Petite Bande, Les Arts Florrissants, the Chapelle Royale and the Leonhardt Consort. In 1989 he was appointed as Lecturer in Baroque Flute at Stanford University, where he remained on the faculty for the next 15 years. In 2003 he moved to Nevada City, California, where he teaches saxophone and jazz improvisation privately, and has created Whole Rest Music for publishing his own jazz educational works.
