André Cardinal , known as Destouches , is a French composer of the Baroque period baptized in Paris on6 avril 1672 and died in this same town on February 7, 1749.
on of a wealthy merchant, Étienne Cardinal, Lord of Les Touches, was educated by the Jesuits at the Collège Louis-le-Grand . With Father Tachard he went on a mission to Siam in 1687 . Returning to France a year later, he entered the army and participated in the siege of Namur in 1692 , discovering his musical talent in the field of combat. He then left the army to pursue his musical aspirations. He follows a musical education with André Campra whom he will replace on his death in 1744 as superintendent of music in title, with François Colin de Blamont. He had previously bought the office of surviving music superintendent, as early as 1718.
The opera Issé de Destouches was performed in Fontainebleau for Louis XIV in 1697 . Louis XIV was impressed and said he appreciated his music as much as that of Jean-Baptiste Lully . In 1713 the king appointed him Inspector General of the Royal Academy of Music . Royal support continued with Louis XV . TheFebruary 8, 1728he became director of the Academy, but did not remain so until 1730 , having to give way to other administrators.
