Konstantin Scherbakov (Russian: Константин Александрович Щербаков, Constantine Alexandrovich Shtcherbakov), born in Barnaul in Siberia on June 11, 1963, is a Russian pianist and teacher.
Biography :
He was the winner of the first Rachmaninoff Competition in 19831. In 1990, he performed solo in four recitals at the Asolo chamber music festival; which launched his international career.
Scherbakov has a brilliant recording career for the Naxos label; among his records under the label are recordings of all Tchaikovsky concertos, Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's nine symphonies, and music by Godowsky, Medtner, Respighi, Shostakovich and Liapunov. Critical acclaim has been high2; Gramophone magazine wrote that Scherbakov plays with "delicacy and affection", and the German Critics' Circle has awarded Scherbakov its first prize twice; once for a recording of Godowsky's Sonata in E minor and the other for the interpretation of the piano version of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. His recording of Shostakovich's Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues received "a triumph" by ClassicsToday.com and a classical award at Cannes in 20011; the Directory magazine rewarding it with a "recommended" (n ° 145).
Since 1998 Konstantin Scherbakov has been a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts1. He is a member of juries in major international competitions - such as the ARD in Munich, Busoni in Bolzano, Liszt in Weimar and among others, in Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Havana… - and he regularly organizes master classes in around the world: Germany, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, Singapore, Cuba, Russia, South Africa, Japan and Brazil. Several of his students have won prizes and distinctions in international competitions. The most recent being Yulianna Avdeïeva, 2010 winner of the Warsaw International Chopin Competition.
Scherbakov has lived since 1992 with his family in Zurich, Switzerland. He spends most of his time in Spain and Russia.
