Highlord formed in 1996 under the moniker Avatar. The band recorded a demo tape and was signed by Underground Symphony, but unfortunately due to line-up problems the band wasn't able to record the album. Some time passed and the band made a new agreement with Northwind Records. Vascè joined the band and the debut album Heir of Power was finally recorded and released in 1998. In 2002 Vascè, being sick of playing metal, left the band and the new singer Andrea Marchisio joined.

In July 2002 the band took part in the second edition of Keeper of Jericho Helloween tribute released by Arise Records, performing the song "Power" from the album Time of the Oath.
