Artist Biography Available in: Jan Novák (born April 8, 1921 in Nová Říše, Moravia - died November 17, 1984 in Neu-Ulm) is a Czechoslovak composer of classical music and film music, as well as a contemporary Latin poet known as pen of Ianus Novak.
He studied in Brno with Vilém Petrželka, then in Prague with Pavel Bořkovec. After the war - which took him to Germany for compulsory labor - he spent a year in the United States where he studied under Aaron Copland and Bohuslav Martinů, who had an important and lasting influence on him.
Novák composed the music for several films by Karel Kachyňa. He also composed music for animated films by Jiří Trnka and Karel Zeman, the main masters of Czech cartoons.
He is the father of flautist Clara Novakova.
