Winona Oak (real name Johanna Ewana Ekmark) is a Swedish singer-songwriter born on October 8, 1994, in Umeå but raised on Sollerön, an island in Lake Siljan known as the "Island of the Sun." Her electropop and synthpop sound combines atmospheric production with emotive vocals, drawing from her Nordic forest upbringing and unique childhood as a trained horse acrobat. She gained international recognition in 2018 through her cover of Haim's "Don't Save Me" and breakthrough collaborations with electronic artists.
Oak's career flourished through key collaborations, including "Beautiful" with What So Not in February 2018, which won Best Independent Dance/Electro, and "Hope" with The Chainsmokers for their Gold-certified album Sick Boy. She released her highly anticipated debut album Island of the Sun on June 10, 2022, through Atlantic Records/Neon Gold, featuring tracks like "Baby Blue," "He Don't Love Me," and "Piano in the Sky." The album showcased her evolution from collaborative features to a fully-realized solo artist, blending heartbreak themes with intoxicating synth production that reflects her enchanting Nordic origins.
