Chrissie D, born Dawnette Nevers in 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer best known for the 2000 UK Top 10 hit "Girls Like Us," recorded with Lady G and the B15 Project.
Nevers displayed musical talent while attending Alpha Academy in Kingston, though her foster parents encouraged her toward a career as a sales representative, and she initially regarded singing as a hobby. A devoted fan of Michael Jackson, she would sing his songs for friends and dress in his style, earning a local reputation as "the loveable clone" of the King of Pop. A family member introduced her to producer Danny Browne of the Bloodfire Posse, who had heard her singing backup at a Kingston recording studio and was impressed enough to bring her into the music business. She quit her sales job to work at Browne's Main Street studio, becoming part of the Main Street Crew alongside General Degree, Junior Tucker, and Lady G, who guided her early development.
As part of the Main Street Crew, Nevers contributed to Browne's Japanese projects, recording cover versions for the Overheat organisation's Super Reggae Mix CD series, which helped prepare her for a solo career. In 1996 she toured four Japanese cities as the opening act for Thriller U. Back in Jamaica, she recorded duets with Lady G ("Provide the Wine") and Richie Stephens ("Physical Attraction"), leading to an acclaimed performance at Reggae Sumfest that drew attention for both her talent and her stage presence. A combination single with Goofy, "Hot Stuff"/"Hot Gal," established her as one of Jamaica's rising stars, and she gained wider international exposure through "Nuh Live Nuh Weh," a dancehall version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" performed with Red Rat.
In 1999, Nevers reunited with Goofy for his debut album, I Don't Give a Damn, contributing to the signature track "Goofy Laugh," an interpretation of Sister Sledge's "Frankie." The following year she teamed up again with Lady G and the B15 Project for "Girls Like Us," which reached the UK Top 10.
