Janney Marín Rivera, known as Chiquis Rivera, born June 26, 1985, in Los Angeles, California, is an American-Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, and TV personality. The eldest daughter of regional Mexican music icon Jenni Rivera, she grew up immersed in music and faced personal challenges.
Chiquis launched her music career in 2014 with her debut single “Paloma Blanca,” a tribute to her mother, who died in a 2012 plane crash. She gained recognition on Premios Juventud with her second single “Esa No Soy Yo.” She appeared in reality shows Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C and I Love Jenni. In 2015, her debut album Ahora, released under her label Sweet Sound Records, topped Billboard’s Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts, earning gold certification for 150,000 copies sold. Her 2018 album Entre Botellas featured a duet with her mother, “Quisieran Tener Mi Lugar,” and collaborations with artists like Lorenzo Méndez. Her 2020 album Playlist won a Latin Grammy, and Abeja Reina (2023) was nominated for Best Banda Album at the Latin Grammy Awards.
In her 2015 memoir Forgiveness, she disclosed being sexually abused by her father, José Trinidad Marín, who was sentenced to over 30 years in prison in 2007, and a falling-out with her mother in 2012 over false rumors of an affair with Jenni’s then-husband, Esteban Loaiza. Her 2022 memoir Unstoppable details her struggles with anxiety and public scrutiny.
Chiquis married Lorenzo Méndez, former singer of La Original Banda El Limón, in 2019, but they divorced in 2020, with Chiquis later citing his aggression and substance abuse. In 2023, she publicly identified as bisexual, revealing a past relationship with a woman, and got engaged to Emilio Sánchez, whom she married in July 2024 in Las Vegas. She also served as a judge on La Academia in 2024.
Nicknamed “La Princesa de la Banda,” Chiquis continues to captivate audiences with her voice, charisma, and resilience.
