Alex de Grassi (born February 13, 1952, in Yokosuka, Japan, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area) is an American guitarist and composer. His expressive steel-string fingerstyle weaves melody, bass, harmony, and rhythm into layered arrangements. Drawing on folk, blues, jazz, classical, and world music, he became a defining voice in contemporary acoustic guitar and an important artist on Windham Hill Records, the label founded by his cousin Will Ackerman. His 1978 debut, Turning: Turning Back, established his distinctive approach.
The Water Garden (1998) earned de Grassi a 1999 Grammy nomination for Best New Age Album. Alongside his solo work, he has collaborated with Michael Manring and Christopher Garcia in the trio deMania and with Quique Cruz on TataMonk. The Bridge (2020) combines six original pieces with arrangements of music by Gershwin and Hendrix, as well as traditional songs. In 2024, he produced and performed on Everything’s Changed, a collaborative album with The Real Sarahs. He continues to perform and teach through workshops and masterclasses.
