Célia Delver, born on February 1, 1975, in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, and passed away on October 23, 2024, in Les Abymes, was a French zouk singer. She rose to fame in 1995 with her iconic song Tu es libre, a heartfelt track about unrequited love that became a defining hit of the 2000s, amassing over 1.4 million views on YouTube. Its emotional lyrics and gentle melody made it a zouk classic.
Publicly shy but warm and humorous according to those close to her, Célia collaborated with prominent zouk artists like Jocelyne Labylle and Jean-Claude François (aka Diktam), her producer. She was also the cousin of Victor Delver, another notable figure in Guadeloupean zouk, reflecting the musical roots in her family. In 2003, she released an album featuring songs like Si tu voulais and Lanmou sé sa ki pli bel. After a hiatus due to health issues, she returned in 2019 with Ne me prends pas la tête, another track about disappointed love.
Beyond music, Célia was involved in humanitarian and artistic projects to promote Caribbean musical heritage. She passed away at 49 from a long illness. Her funeral took place on October 31, 2024, in Petit-Bourg, where she was honored. Her soulful voice and contributions to zouk remain a cherished legacy in the Antilles.
