Marit Larsen from Lørenskog has been part of the Norwegian music scene since childhood. Raised in a musical family – her mother is a pianist and her father a cellist in the Oslo Philharmonic – she started playing violin at just five years old. At age eight she became best friends with Marion Raven, and together they formed the pop duo M2M, which was signed by Atlantic Records and achieved international success with hits like “Don’t Say You Love Me” and “Mirror Mirror.” When the label dissolved the duo in 2002, Larsen took time to find her own voice.
Her comeback arrived with the solo album Under the Surface in 2006, which debuted at number three on the Norwegian sales charts and was certified double platinum. The album and its singles were played over 880 times on NRK P3 that year, and Larsen won the Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) for Best Female Artist as well as the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Norwegian Act. Follow-up album The Chase (2008) cemented her position – “If a Song Could Get Me You” went straight to number one in Norway and later topped the charts in both Germany and Austria. Spark (2011) and When the Morning Comes (2014) followed, the latter partly recorded in Nashville with a group of talented session musicians.
Musically, Larsen sits at the intersection of folk-pop and acoustic singer-songwriter. Her style is often described as alternative pop/rock with a folk-pop sensibility. Her songs are characterized by warm melodies, lingering guitar work, and lyrics that balance the everyday with the poetic. Her voice is bright and clear, with an intimacy that lends even the most fully arranged tracks a personal feel – making her equally at home on a large festival stage as in an intimate club setting.
