Artist BiographyAvailable in:

Beth Gibbons (born January 4, 1965, in Exeter, England) is the unforgettable voice behind the pioneering trip-hop band Portishead. She is known for her fragile yet powerful vocals and has, for decades, captivated listeners with a unique blend of emotional intimacy and atmospheric intensity.
In May 2024, she released her first solo album, Lives Outgrown, produced together with James Ford and Lee Harris. The album, developed over more than ten years, is deeply personal, exploring themes such as grief, motherhood, aging, anxiety, and mortality. Its music is characterized by understated folk-rock, subtle orchestral layers, and Gibbons’ signature voice—a clear departure from the sound that made her famous with Portishead.
Lives Outgrown was met with high critical acclaim for its emotional depth and restrained power. It was shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize and appeared on multiple year-end lists, with critics calling it “a haunting collection of modern torch songs” that radiates reflective maturity.
In the summer of 2025, she toured North America and performed sold-out shows in Sydney and at Camden’s Roundhouse. Her concerts combined the full Lives Outgrown repertoire with new, meditative versions of Portishead classics such as “Roads” and “Glory Box,” accompanied by strings, brass, and understated percussion. Critics highlighted how she used silence and simplicity on stage, letting every line and note land with precise weight.
Beth Gibbons’ music today is a slow, meditative experience—introspective, poetic, and richly layered. Whether performing solo or with Portishead, she invites listeners into a universe where sorrow and beauty coexist, and every verse feels like a conscious breath.
