Herbert Jeffrey „Herbie“ Hancock (* 12. April 1940 in Chicago, Illinois) ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Pianist und Komponist sowie Oscar- und Grammy-Preisträger. Die Improvisation Hancocks ist geprägt von einer perlenden, „funky“ Spielweise und der Verwendung expressiver Kreuzrhythmen. Viele seiner Kompositionen sind Standards geworden und dienen anderen Jazz-Musikern als Improvisationsgrundlage. Dazu gehören Watermelon Man, Cantaloupe Island und Maiden Voyage, die alle in den 1960er Jahren auf dem Blue-Note-Label erschienen sind.
