Especialmente conocido por formar parte de los Neville Brothers, su obra en solitario es menos conocida, a pesar de haber conseguido en 1967 un número uno en las listas de R&B con «Tell It Like It Is».

De hecho, sus primeras grabaciones son de la primera mitad de la década de 1960, y fueron arregladas y, en ocasiones, escritas, por Allen Toussaint, para los sellos Minit y Parlo. Algunos temas de esa época son «She Took You for a Ride» y «You Think You're So Smart». Su trabajo subsiguiente, que incluye colaboraciones con Linda Ronstadt, ha estado más vinculado al pop-rock e, incluso, al country.
