Dai tempi di Dover, l'inglesissima Stone, apparsa sulle scene musicali a 16 anni, ha sempre mostrato forza e intensità, nonostante ci fosse ai tempi chi insisteva che, essendo così giovane, non sapesse cosa stava facendo. I critici invece dissentivano, definendola una cantante che possiede una "vena ricca, profonda, piena di soul", come ha scritto il New York Post, "contrariamente a qualsiasi cantante della sua generazione".
