Album DescriptionAvailable in:
The budget-priced British compilation The Rock 'N' Roll Ballads presents a selection of the tracks Roy Orbison recorded for Sun Records in 1956 and 1957. "Ooby Dooby," Orbison's only singles chart entry from the period, is featured in an alternate take. Otherwise, all the A- and B-sides of Orbison's four Sun singles are included ("Go! Go! Go!," "Rockhouse," "You're My Baby," "Sweet and Easy to Love," "Devil Doll," "Chicken-Hearted," and "I Like Love"), plus "I Never Knew" and "You're Gonna Cry," which made their first appearance on the 1961 Sun album Roy Orbison at the Rockhouse, and seven tracks first heard on collections issued from the late '60s on: "Tryin' to Get to You," "Claudette," "It's Too Late," the alternate take of "Ooby Dooby," "A True Love Goodbye," "Domino," and "Fool's Hall of Fame." Orbison is surprisingly successful in tackling rockabilly, with "Go! Go! Go!" particularly strong, while his version of "Tryin' to Get to You," also cut by Elvis Presley, provides an interesting contrast to the more familiar interpretation. There are better and more complete collections of this material available, but they are more expensive. At a cheap price, this album gives a glimpse of Orbison's rockabilly roots.
