In the Midst of Life We Are in Death is the debut and only full-length studio album by Danish death metal band Cerekloth, released on April 16, 2013 through Hells Headbangers Records. The album is noted for its bleak atmosphere, merging elements of old-school death metal with morbid, doom-laden overtones.
Following several demos and a 7-inch release, Cerekloth entered the studio in 2012 to record what would become their first and final album. The band aimed to create a sound that was both rooted in traditional death metal and infused with a slower, more suffocating mood. The recording features raw, analog production, emphasizing the band's commitment to authenticity and atmosphere over modern polish.
The album delivers a blend of crushing mid-tempo riffs, guttural vocals, and eerie melodic passages. Lyrically, it explores themes of death, existential dread, religious decay, and nihilism. The title itself is a reference to the medieval phrase "In the midst of life we are in death," underscoring the album's preoccupation with mortality and spiritual desolation.
