GosT is an electronic project cloaked in mystery. I remember reading the one-man group hails from Michigan, but he/she/it supposedly hails from “Below” (perhaps Hell, Michigan?). Regardless, GosT is a very interesting project that gets to ask one important question. Have you ever wondered what an 80s rave in a haunted house/slasher film would sound like? For anyone who likes their electronic music playful and loud, the answer is pretty certain. This album is boatloads of fun. GosT operates with a style of what’s called synthwave, but that’s a rather odd name for something that sounds straight from the 80s and John Carpenter’s films. (If you haven’t heard the other well-known synthwave group Perturbator yet, get on that pronto.) What’s quite impressive about Behemoth is how it never sounds dated, despite its obvious affinity towards 80s sounds and motifs. There’s a slight dubstep feel to some of the heavier sounds, and there’s a clear love of extreme metal hidden beneath the shiny synth work and bombastic bass.
Behemoth is especially strong, given how weak electronic albums tend to come across. It’s a sound best suited for singles or EPs, but GosT does a great job of telling a story through the album; you can imagine where you are in the slasher film during different points in the album. For example, “Master” sounds like an early chase/gleeful killing spree. Hell, that’s another aspect of the record that lends to its success. Each of these songs works well on its own, say in a random playlist; however, they work even better in sequence. GosT has created one Hell of a blood-filled dance party.
