Sorti en avril 1969 chez Columbia Records, ce tout premier album éponyme du septuor (qui se rebaptisera plus tard simplement Chicago) s'impose comme un coup de maître rarissime : un premier opus double face, dense et parfaitement maîtrisé. Après avoir affûté son style dans les clubs de Chicago sous le nom de The Big Thing, le groupe, repéré et renommé par le producteur James Guercio, y fusionne rock psychédélique, blues, jazz et arrangements classiques.

Le disque oppose et associe avec une fluidité bluffante un quartet rock incisif — porté par la guitare incendiaire de Terry Kath — et un trio de cuivres surpuissant. Un quart de l'album est devenu instantanément classique grâce aux singles « Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? », « Beginnings », « Questions 67 and 68 » et leur reprise explosive de Steve Winwood, « I'm a Man ». Entre blues lourd (« South California Purples »), longues jams improvisées (« Liberation »), expérimentations avant-gardistes (« Free Form Guitar ») et pièces engagées (« Someday (August 29, 1968) »), cet album fondateur reste une pièce maîtresse absolue du jazz-rock.
