Dave Brubeck's Once When I Was Very Young was recorded with his quartet in 1991. Brubeck had already been leading combos for 45 years and, 19 years later, he is still touring the world. Clarinetist Bill Smith, bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones join the pianist to perform eight songs that he remembers fondly from his childhood such as "Shine on Harvest Moon" and "Among My Souvenirs." The Quartet also plays Brubeck's "Dancin' in Rhythm" and one of two renditions of the title cut; the second version is sung by a choral group. On this nostalgic and relaxed set, Brubeck not only looks back to his childhood but ahead with inventive solos that inspire his excellent sidemen to create memorable music.
