Fue grabado ante una audiencia en vivo en el estudio The Barn de Levon Helm en Woodstock, Nueva York, a finales de febrero y principios de marzo de 2009.

El álbum fue producido por el colaborador de la banda de mucho tiempo Paul Stacey y lanzado en Silver Arrow Records.

El CD en sí está diseñado para tener la apariencia de un disco de vinilo .

Originalmente, solo la parte Before the Frost del álbum doble estaba disponible en CD, y la compra del CD venía con un código que permitía descargar la parte Until the Freeze del sitio web de Black Crowes.

Before the Frost...Until the Freeze es el último álbum de material original de la banda que presenta al baterista Steve Gorman , el guitarrista Luther Dickinson y el teclista Adam MacDougall.
