Sorti en 1972, ce tout premier album éponyme des Eagles, enregistré aux studios Olympic de Londres sous la houlette du producteur Glyn Johns, a posé les fondations du son country-rock californien qui allait dominer les années 70. Le disque s'impose immédiatement comme un succès commercial majeur (certifié disque de platine et grimpant à la 22ᵉ place des charts américains), propulsé par trois singles devenus des classiques de la radio : « Take It Easy » (n°12), « Witchy Woman » (n°9) et « Peaceful Easy Feeling » (n°22).

Entre harmonies vocales impeccables, guitares cristallines et anecdotes devenues légendaires — Glenn Frey révélera plus tard que le groupe était sous péyotl lors de la séance photo de la pochette dans le parc national de Joshua Tree —, l'album propulse la formation au sommet. Salué par le magazine Rolling Stone parmi les 500 plus grands albums de tous les temps, il contient avec « Take It Easy » l'un des morceaux fondateurs de l'histoire du rock, inscrit au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
