"The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale" ist das 22. Studioalbum von Prince. Es erschien am 24. August 1999 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records und enthält zehn Songs, darunter die Single "Extraordinary". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 39 Minuten und 17 Sekunden. Das Albumcover gestaltete der Fotograf und Art Director Steve Parke.
Die Songs auf dem Album wurden zwischen 1985 und 1996 in Hollywood, Paris, Melbourne, Tokio, und den Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen aufgenommen. Verhandlungen zwischen Prince und dem Label Warner Bros. Records am 26. April 1996 führten dazu, dass der Vertrag, der ihn bis Ende 1999 an das Label band, so geändert wird, dass er bis dahin nur noch zwei statt drei Studioalben abliefern musste, und dass er ab sofort auch Musik bei anderen Labels veröffentlichen durfte. Am gleichen Termin präsentierte Prince den Verantwortlichen von Warner Bros. Records zwei fertig produzierte Alben inklusive Artwork und endgültiger Tracklist, die Warner Bros. Records so akzeptieren musste. Es handelte sich dabei um das im Juli 1996 veröffentlichte Album "Chaos And Disorder" und um das Album "The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale". Im Booklet des Albums ist die Formulierung "Originally Intended 4 Private Use Only" zu finden.
Im Gegensatz zu "Chaos And Disorder" wurde "The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale" unter dem Namen Prince veröffentlicht, da ein Großteil der Songs bereits vor seiner Namensänderung 1993 aufgenommen wurde. Prince machte keine Werbung für das Album und ließ auch keine Tournee folgen.
Das Album erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz 85 und wurde in den USA ca. 130.000 Mal verkauft. In Deutschland wurde das Album 30.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte Platz 44 der deutschen Album-Charts.

The release of The Vault… Old Friends 4 Sale proved Prince’s point: that record labels can and will release music against the wishes of the artists whom created it. One minute Warner Brothers were wanting to limit the volume of output Prince put into the market, and since parting with the label, the next minute they put out a greatest hits package The Very Best Of Prince in 2001 and in 1999, this. That said, it is a shame it needed a dispute over a contract to get these songs released. Unfortunately for Prince it was Warner’s vault not Prince’s – yet another vindication of Prince’s point as he should have owned his music in the first place. Nevertheless The Vault… Old Friends 4 Sale provides some gems; 5 Women, There Is Lonely and Old Friends 4 Sale – perhaps Prince’s most revealing song to date. There is some fun to be found too, taking form with great swing in The Rest Of My Life and Its About That Walk, although the top track on the album is the bongo-tastic When The Lights Go Down a remarkable tune and which demands to be listened to over and again.
