Playing the Angel (deutsch: Den Engel spielen) ist das elfte Studioalbum von Depeche Mode. Erstmals in der Geschichte der Band schafften es mit Suffer Well, I Want It All und Nothing’s Impossible drei von Dave Gahan geschriebene Lieder auf das Album. Der Name des Albums stammt aus dem Song The Darkest Star. Dort heißt es in der ersten Strophe: „Oh you sad one / Playing the Angel / Isn’t so easy where you’re from“.
Dem Album folgte die weltweite Tournee Touring the Angel sowie im September 2006 der Konzert-Mitschnitt Touring the Angel: Live in Milan.
Die Band gibt an, dass sie mit diesem Album sich nicht neu erfunden haben, sondern alte Wege gegangen wären. Die musikalische Stilrichtung orientierte sich an verschiedenen früheren Alben, angefangen bei Black Celebration bis Violator. Das gesamte Album sei recht düster gehalten, die Texte pessimistisch. Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger Exciter, der durch überwiegend digitale Sounds geprägt ist, wurde bei Playing the Angel verstärkt auf raue, analoge Klänge mit Verzerrungen und Übersteuerungen gesetzt.
Die Untertitel „pain and suffering in various tempos“ („Schmerz und Leid in verschiedenen Tempi“) auf der Rückseite des Covers und „pain and suffering in various countries“ („Schmerz und Leid in verschiedenen Ländern“) auf Fanartikeln zur Tour bilden einerseits das Motto des Albums, spielen aber andererseits auch selbstironisch auf das Image der Band an.

A return to form. There, I said it. It's a boring old cliché but in this case, an appropriate one. The troubled electro kings have come storming back with album number 11: a deeply personal work which shows off Dave Gahan's dramatic vocals to perfection, and shines with trademark Mode melancholia and dark sexuality.
The mood swings from hurt in tracks like "A Pain That I'm Used To" and "I Want It All" to hope, which tentatively radiates from "Nothing's Impossible". The first single, "Precious", manages to retain a pop catchiness while still remaining very much a lament. The whole album is an ode to isolation and confusion.
Glowing with crystalline synths, softly menacing guitars and fragile contemplation, Playing The Angel conjures up an almost tangible sense of damage. If you want to get a little closer to Gahan's notorious journey to heroin-induced hell and back, you've come to the right place.
