Total Science is a collaborative musical project featuring producers Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith, who met in 1987 on the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England. The pair began collaborating formally in 1994, initially recording under the name Funky Technicians, with their first recorded track being "Got to Believe."
Their careers began with Jason Greenhalgh launching his solo career in 1991 under the moniker Q Project with the release "Freestyle Fanatic." The duo gained further recognition with Greenhalgh's track "Champion Sound." In late 1997, they established the CIA label with the assistance of Brillo from Timeless Recordings. They released the Silent Reign EP for Goldie's Metalheadz and gained attention through a Bad Company remix of "Champion Sound." Their debut album, Advance, was released in 2000 and included downtempo experiments titled "Breaks." Following this, they released the album Mars Needs... Total Science in 2006.
The partnership also saw the creation of the Skin Deep imprint, which was noted for forging broken beat to acclaim. Throughout 2001, Total Science achieved prominence within the drum & bass scene, releasing material on the Digital and Reinforced Records labels.
