Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Influx UK is the recording name of Gavin Price, a British drum and bass producer and DJ born in 1970 in Canning Town, East London. He is best known as one half of Influx Datum, whose 2002 single "Back For More" became one of the biggest drum and bass tracks of the year and charted nationally in the UK, and for his acclaimed debut solo album 2 Million and Rising, released under the Influx UK name.

Price began making music as a child, editing records onto cassette using the tape pause button from around age nine, and later learned bass and guitar by watching his father play in a band. As a teenager in the mid-1980s he took up scratching and mixing on turntables in his bedroom as hip-hop reached the UK, building a large record collection spanning 1970s funk, jazz, soul, and early Chicago house and Detroit techno. He was an active participant in London's late-1980s rave scene, attending illegal warehouse parties such as Biology and Energy. His first production was aired on Radio London in 1987 by Dave Pearce, and he subsequently joined the hip-hop group Stickya, who received support from Tim Westwood and airplay on BBC Radio 1's Rap Show.

In 1998 Price relocated to Miami, where he partnered with Beatcamp co-founder Marco Fabian, running Beatcamp's weekly drum and bass night for over six years and bringing in international DnB talent. Under the name Influx Datum, the pair were signed by DJ SS of Formation Records, and in 2002 released "Back For More," alongside further singles and remixes for Hospital Records, Universal Records (for MJ Cole), and Warners (for J-Walk). While part of Influx Datum, Price also continued producing solo material, and after moving back to London in 2003 he began releasing this work as Influx UK. These releases formed the basis of his debut album, 2 Million and Rising, which received strong critical acclaim and was cited by Time Out magazine as one of the best drum and bass albums ever made. In support of the record, Influx UK toured internationally alongside DJ SS as part of the World of Drum and Bass tour, performing in countries including Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, the USA, Canada, Poland, Estonia, Germany, and Latvia.
