Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Sam Gray is an English singer, songwriter and record producer from Hull, England, known both for his own recordings as a solo artist and for writing songs for a wide range of international acts, including The Chainsmokers, Tiësto, Meduza, Kygo, Jonas Blue, Hozier, Example, Armin van Buuren, Nile Rodgers and Ava Max, work that has amassed over two billion streams and multiple chart hits worldwide.

Gray began his songwriting career in 2010 before launching a solo career fronting a three-piece band. He toured as a special guest for acts including The Overtones, East 17, Westlife, David Ford, Charlie Simpson and Peter Andre, performing at venues such as the London Palladium and The O2 Arena. His debut single, "Cartwheel Queen", was playlisted by BBC Radio 2 and led into his debut album, Brighter Day, released on 24 October 2011. Produced by Brendan Lynch, the album also featured "Two Hearts" and drew on guest musicians including drummers Steve White and Alan White and Ocean Colour Scene bassist Damon Minchella; Steve White went on to manage and produce Gray, helping secure him a publishing deal with Notting Hill Music and a recording contract with Transmission Recordings. In November and December 2011, Gray was named Caffè Nero's Artist of the Month, accompanying a nationwide tour of the chain's coffee shops, and he was also the subject of a Channel 4 television documentary.

In 2012 Gray moved toward a more soulful sound influenced by Motown and blue-eyed soul, exemplified by the single "This Girl", ahead of his second album, Too Much Of A Good Thing, released on 4 February 2013. Around the same period he wrote songs for other artists, including for The Voice and Hollyoaks star Abi Phillips. In 2013 he competed, alongside Danish producer Jack Rowan, in the Danish National Song Contest, the national selection for that year's Eurovision Song Contest, with the song "Invincible", which was eliminated in the final.

Gray has since continued to work under additional projects and collaborations: as JUIC3BOX, he partnered with singer-songwriter Alice France on the single "True Love", which surpassed 2.2 million streams and was added to the SiriusXM BPM playlist. He also performs as one half of the country duo Brown & Gray with American singer Kaci Brown; their debut single, "Top Down", surpassed 25 million streams, became a US Highway Find, and featured on BBC Radio 2's B Playlist in the UK. Now primarily active as a songwriter, Gray is based in the United States.
