Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Claude Kelly (born December 28, 1980) is an American record producer, songwriter, and singer. A four-time Grammy Award nominee, he has written and produced commercially successful songs for artists including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Lopez, Kesha, Miley Cyrus, and One Direction.

Born and raised in New York City to a Jamaican-born mother, Kelly was introduced early to jazz, reggae, blues and R&B. He studied piano and flute at the Third Street Music School Settlement and sang with the New York Boys Choir before attending Grace Church School and Riverdale Country School. He went on to Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating in 2002 with a degree in music business/management. After graduation he worked as a session singer on the East Coast while beginning to write his own material, placing his first song, "You're Taking It," on a 2002 compilation for the Japanese clothing line A Bathing Ape. His song "Daddy's Little Girl," recorded by Frankie J and released as a single in 2006, led to a publishing contract with Warner/Chappell Music.

Through an introduction to producer RedOne, Kelly began working with Lady Gaga on her debut album, which in turn led to a connection with Akon. Kelly and Akon co-wrote "Hold My Hand," originally intended for Whitney Houston, but Akon instead recorded it as a duet with Michael Jackson; it appeared on Jackson's 2010 posthumous album Michael. Nicknamed the "Studio Beast," Kelly went on to co-write hits including Britney Spears' "Circus," Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," and Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." He received Grammy Award nominations for Fantasia's "Bittersweet" (2011), Bruno Mars' "Grenade" and Ledisi's "Pieces of Me" (2012), and Tamia's "Beautiful Surprise" (2013), and was named to The Hollywood Reporter's 2013 list of Music's Top 35 Hitmakers. He also served as a vocal producer for the US version of The X Factor in 2011 and 2012.

In 2014, Kelly formed the R&B duo Louis York with fellow songwriter and producer Chuck Harmony, and the pair co-founded the record label Weirdo Workshop the following year. Louis York's debut EP, Masterpiece Theater – Act I, was released in 2015, led by the single "Clair Huxtable." Originally based in Los Angeles, Kelly is now based in Nashville.
