Lowkey, born Kareem Dennis on 23 May 1986 in London, is a British-Iraqi rapper, poet and political activist known for his politically charged, conscious hip-hop and his prolific work as a campaigner for causes including Palestinian solidarity and anti-war activism. Born to an English father and an Iraqi mother from Baghdad, he began rapping at the age of twelve and later frequented open mic sessions at the Deal Real record shop on Carnaby Street, where he adopted his stage name after winning a rap battle over its use. It was there he met Doc Brown, who invited him to feature on the single "Donnie's Lament," helping launch his early profile.
Lowkey built his reputation independently through the mixtape series Key to the Game (2003–2005), before touring Europe in support of Immortal Technique, Canibus and Dead Prez. His debut album, Dear Listener, followed in October 2008, and he released the compilation Uncensored later that year. During this period he also joined the hip-hop collective Poisonous Poets, formed by Reveal and also featuring Doc Brown, Stylah, Tony D and Therapist, who released the mixtape Poisonous Poetry in 2005. He was also part of the supergroup Mongrel, formed with Reverend and the Makers frontman Jon McClure, Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders, former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson and Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell; the group released the album Better Than Heavy for free with The Independent in 2009 and performed in Venezuela at the invitation of President Hugo Chávez.
His second album, Soundtrack to the Struggle, was released independently in October 2011 and became his first entry on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 57, as well as reaching number 6 on the UK R&B Chart. In April 2012 he announced a hiatus from music to concentrate on his studies. He returned in 2016 with the single "Ahmed," followed by further singles addressing racism, xenophobia and the refugee crisis. His third album, Soundtrack to the Struggle 2, was released in April 2019 to critical acclaim, and a further installment, Soundtrack to the Struggle 3, followed in October 2024.
Throughout his career, Lowkey has been a prominent voice in the Stop the War Coalition and a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and has been detained by Israeli airport police on separate occasions while travelling to perform in the West Bank. He has written for The Guardian and Ceasefire Magazine, hosts a podcast on MintPress News, and publicly endorsed Jeremy Corbyn during the 2017 and 2019 UK general elections. He also wrote Max and Beth, a rhyming adaptation of Macbeth staged at the Theatre Royal, Bath in 2008, and co-founded the non-profit People's Army with rapper Logic.
