Ezra Michael Koenig (born April 8, 1984) is an American musician, record producer, and radio personality, best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the indie rock band Vampire Weekend. He was born in New York City to Bobby Bass, a psychotherapist, and Robin Koenig, a set dresser, and grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after his family moved there shortly after his birth. Koenig is Jewish, with family roots in Romania and Hungary, and attended Buck's Rock Camp in Connecticut as a teenager before graduating from Glen Ridge High School. He began writing music around age ten and, while studying at Columbia University, wrote a blog called Internet Vibes and took part in several musical projects, including the band the Sophisticuffs with Wes Miles and the hip hop group L'Homme Run with future Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson. After graduating, he taught English through Teach for America in Brooklyn until a 2007 record deal with XL Recordings ended his teaching career.
Koenig formed Vampire Weekend in 2005 with Columbia University acquaintances Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio, taking the band's name from an unreleased short film he had made with friends. The group's self-titled 2008 debut album blended indie pop, Afropop, and chamber music influences and was widely acclaimed, followed by Contra (2010), Modern Vampires of the City (2013), Father of the Bride (2019), and Only God Was Above Us (2024). Koenig has won two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album, for Modern Vampires of the City in 2014 and Father of the Bride in 2020, and has received further nominations including two for Album of the Year, one for his production work on Beyoncé's Lemonade and another for Father of the Bride.
Beyond Vampire Weekend, Koenig created and wrote the Netflix animated series Neo Yokio, which debuted in 2017 and starred Jaden Smith, and has hosted the Apple Music radio show Time Crisis, alongside co-host Jake Longstreth, since 2015. He has contributed vocals, writing, or production to work by artists including Beyoncé, Haim, Chromeo, Major Lazer, the Very Best, Liam Gallagher, and Phoenix, and appeared in the HBO series Girls and at the 2024 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. He has also publicly supported U.S. political candidate Bernie Sanders, performing at his campaign rallies in 2016 and 2020.
Koenig's partner, actress Rashida Jones, gave birth to their son in August 2018; in later interviews Koenig has referred to Jones as his wife.
