Daddy Waku is a Congolese-born singer-songwriter, born in Kinshasa as the son of a diplomat. His father's postings took the family through Switzerland, Austria, Chad and Ethiopia during his childhood. His parents divorced in the 1980s, and he was later sent, along with his siblings, to Brussels, where he formed a lasting bond with Belgium and met childhood friend Fabio Volante at the Athénée Royal school in Waterloo. A rejected student visa forced him to leave Belgium and return to Kinshasa, where his father died shortly afterward. Orphaned on his father's side, he moved to Bonn, Germany, to live with his maternal uncle, a period marked by further hardship, including the death of his mother in 1993 and the threat of deportation during a diplomatic crisis between Mobutu's Zaïre and Germany.

After completing his studies in Germany, Daddy Waku returned to Belgium, where he reunited with his brother Guy and sister Alexia and was drawn into music, a longstanding tradition in the Waku family. He trained his voice, learned piano and studio recording techniques, citing Stevie Wonder, Sting, Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and Donny Hathaway among his key influences from 1970s and 1980s soul and pop music.

His professional career began in the early 2000s, when he wrote songs for French artists across gospel, soul, pop and R'n'B genres. He subsequently formed the band SOUL:ID with longtime friends; the group's debut album, Sex, Love and Philosophy, was released through the ABB label in the United States and AVEX in Japan, and was followed by touring in Europe, the United States and Africa. During this period he collaborated with artists including Amel Bent, Ophélie Winter, Passi, Lynnsha and Wyclef Jean, and contributed backing vocals for Eddy Mitchell, Lara Fabian, Axelle Red, M. Pokora, Maurane and Craig David.

Encouraged by Fabio Volante, Daddy Waku went on to release his debut solo album, recorded in English and French, marking his emergence as an artist in his own right. Tracks such as "Never Promise" and "Once My Lover" reflect a sensitive, personal songwriting style, while the album's lead single, "Out of Time," was released after he had become a father, presented as an acoustic and authentic project reflecting a newfound sense of artistic freedom.
