Høst is a Norwegian band based in Indre Østfold that played music in the borderland between hard rock and progressive rock. The band existed between 1973 and 1978 and is one of the first rock bands to make use of Norwegian lyrics.
Consisting of Svein Rønning (guitar), Lasse Nilsen (guitar), Knut R. Lie (drums), Geir Jahren (vocalist) and Bernt Bodal (bass), Høst recorded their first record På sterke vinger, which was released on Polygram in 1974, in six days. The record was well received. Some time later, Nilsen left Høst in favour of Bazar. By then, Rønning and Lie had already left the band and started Déjà Vu. New members of Høst became Willy Bendiksen (drums), Fezza Ellingsen (guitar) and Halvdan Nedrejord (organ), all of whom had previously played together in the band St. Helena. This lineup released the LP Hardt mot hardt in 1976, which proved a commercial disappointment compared to its predecessor. Where På sterke vinger had drawn most of its inspiration from English hard rock, Hardt mot hardt was far more musically advanced and much closer to progressive rock.
After Hardt mot hardt, Ellingsen was replaced by the guitarist from one of Bendiksen's former bands, Flax — John Hesla — but the record label put its foot down when the band wanted to make a new record. As a compromise, the compilation LP Extra! Extra! was released with four new tracks in 1977. Shortly after, the band changed their name to Ice and began singing in English. Despite an appearance on NRK, it was not a success, and in the summer of 1978 it was over for Høst.
After Høst, the members went their separate ways. Bodal teamed up with Kjell Inge Røkke to go to the USA and make their fortune, and is today a multi-millionaire living in the US, where he is the majority owner of American Seafoods. The others are still involved in music, though primarily on a hobby basis. Rønning, Jahren and Lie have all been involved with Kerrs Pink, while Bendiksen has played with, among others, Road, Gry Jannicke Jarlum and Ronni Le Tekrø. He currently plays in Wild Willy's Gang and is the owner of the venue Rock In in Oslo.
Since their breakup, Høst have had several reunion tours. A flexi-single featuring the song "Stille timer" has also been released, along with a compilation album, Live & Unreleased, which includes a radio session from 1975, four English-language songs from their time as Ice, and three songs from a reunion tour in 1991.
