Although they met in Montpellier, Martha “Martica” Galarraga and Eliene Castillo, our two panteras, were born and raised in Cuba…
Martica comes from a traditional Afro-Cuban background and spent most of her adolescence singing in the streets of Havana to the sound of the sacred drums of the Yoruba religion, a culture passed down to her by her father.
Eliene, for her part, honed her skills at the Havana Conservatory, drawing primarily on Afro-American music. Hip-hop, jazz, funk, but also reggae and classical music form the main building blocks of her musical DNA.
Two artists with very different roots, but who have chosen to combine their talents in this joint project, Las Panteras. Newcomers to the Afro-Cuban scene? Not really, because before embarking on this project, Martica and Eliene each gained extensive experience working with leading figures in Cuban music such as Omar Sosa, Felipe Cabrera, Silvio Rodríguez and Chucho Valdés.
