The fast-paced, guitar-driven melodies of Canadian quintet Good Kid help highlight alternate routes to rock renown. Over the course of four self-titled EPs, the group has built a loyal following consisting largely of online streamers and avid gamers; their music has been placed in Twitch broadcasts and the popular online game platform Fortnite. That internet success gradually transitioned into the real world, with popular live support slots and headlining tours alike. Their debut album, Can We Hang Out Sometime? appeared in early 2026.The five members of Good Kid -- singer Nick Frosst, guitarists David Wood and Jacob Tsafatinos, bassist Michael Kozakov, and drummer Jonathon Kereliuk -- all attended the University of Toronto as computer science majors and hold day jobs as software engineers and entrepreneurs. (Frosst, for instance, co-founded Cohere, a billion-dollar company that creates AI-driven business products.) The five friends found that music was an honest way to express themselves outside of the computer lab (the band write songs collectively, with no primary songwriter) and released music gradually and deliberately -- simple, uncomplicated rock with melodic guitar lines and spiky chords to spare.Their 2018 EP Good Kid featured tracks written, recorded, and released over the preceding three years, including “Nomu,” “Atlas,” and “Witches.” Follow-up Good Kid 2, issued in 2020, featured tracks like “Down with the King,” “Pox,” and “Drifting.” That same year, the group issued Ghost King’s Revenge, an online video game in which players had to rescue the group’s mascot, Nomu Kid; the game was accompanied by a soundtrack featuring chiptune remixes of the group’s discography. By this point, the members of Good Kid had cultivated a loyal fan base in online spaces like the social messaging app Discord and the live-streaming service Twitch. Consequently, fans began sharing their music on streams -- something the band openly encouraged, without fear of copyright strikes -- and successfully lobbied the makers of the massively popular online game Fortnite to include several of their songs for the game’s in-universe radio station. The group moved from strength to strength after the COVID-19 pandemic, releasing EPs Good Kid 3 (2023) and Good Kid 4 (2024), and toured North America and Europe as both a headliner and a support act for groups like Portugal. The Man and Lovejoy. They earned a Juno Award nomination in their homeland for Breakthrough Group of the Year. The group entered the studio in 2025 to record their debut album with producer John Congleton (Lana Del Rey, the Killers). The resulting Can We Hang Out Sometime? was issued in early 2026.
