Behind Les Imprimés is Morten Martens — born, raised and based in Kristiansand. For over twenty years he worked quietly behind the scenes as a producer and musician for others, built his own studio on the island of Odderøya, and won a Spellemann Award in 2006 for producing a hip-hop album, with nominations in three other genres. When the pandemic shut the world down in 2020, he finally found time to focus on his own project — a project that had taken shape through countless late nights in the studio after other people’s sessions had ended. Debut single “I’ll Never Leave” arrived on Big Crown Records in 2023, followed by debut album Rêverie and second album Fading Forward. He is now working on record number three.
The music of Les Imprimés is hard to place in any single category, and that is the whole point. Martens plays nearly every instrument himself, blending ’50s doo-wop, ’60s and ’70s soul, the soft textures of the ’80s and ’90s alternative rock with a hip-hop-rooted rhythmic sensibility — traced back to the old gospel, soul and funk records he discovered as a child through samples in rap music. The production is lush but never overcrowded, the arrangements do not waste a single note, and the melodies linger long after the music has stopped. It is soul music from a man who himself admits he does not have the classic soul voice — but who does it his own way, and precisely for that reason sounds like no one else.
