Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon flag icon
Tormentor is a legendary Hungarian black metal band that emerged from Budapest in the 1980s and created one of the most influential underground albums of its era. Their groundbreaking debut album Anno Domini (recorded in 1988) managed to circulate through Europe's cassette trading community despite being created under communist Hungary – a remarkable achievement that caught the attention of pioneering bands such as Mayhem.

Vocalist Attila Csihar became a key collaborator with Norwegian metal legends Mayhem, and performed on their groundbreaking 1994 album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, while Tormentor took a break. The band reunited briefly in 2001 with the experimental Recipe Ferrum before disappearing again.

After a 26-year hiatus, Tormentor made a triumphant comeback in 2017 with their classic 1988 lineup intact. Since their reunion show in Budapest in 2018, they have performed at major European festivals including Brutal Assault and Beyond the Gates, and proved that their raw, uncompromising vision still resonates. Their catalog – including the recently re-released Anno Domini – stands as a testament to Eastern European metal's vital place in black metal history.
