Zhang Yixing (张艺兴), professionally known as Lay, is a Chinese singer, rapper, dancer, and actor born on October 7, 1991, in Changsha, Hunan. He competed in the 2005 television talent show Star Academy as a child performer. In 2008, he was selected by SM Entertainment during auditions in Wuhan and relocated to South Korea for training. Zhang debuted on April 8, 2012, as the main dancer and sub-vocalist of the South Korean-Chinese boy group EXO, performing on the group's debut single "Mama".
Zhang launched a solo career in mainland China beginning in 2016, releasing the single "What U Need?" on October 7, 2016. His extended play Lose Control was released on October 28, 2016, and reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart. He released the full-length studio albums Lay 02 Sheep (2017) and Namanana (2018), the latter a bilingual Chinese-English production featuring collaborations with Bazzi. In April 2022, Zhang left SM Entertainment while remaining with EXO. He has since released the studio albums Lit (2020), East (2021), and West (2022). Beyond music, he acted in films including Kung Fu Yoga (2017) and The Island (2018), served as a production director on the talent television shows Idol Producer and Youth with You, and founded the entertainment company Chromosome Entertainment Group in 2020.
