Chika, born Jane Chika Oranika on March 9, 1997, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Montgomery, Alabama. She began writing poetry, singing, and rapping in middle school and taught herself guitar in elementary school. Chika gained initial viral attention in 2017 with her #EgoChallenge, using Beyoncé's song to promote body positivity, and released a Pride-themed remix of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" that same year. Her lyrical prowess and genre-blending approach, combining conscious hip-hop with melodic R&B influences, quickly distinguished her as a rising voice in contemporary rap.
In March 2020, Chika released her debut EP Industry Games on Warner Records, which garnered critical acclaim and established her presence in the hip-hop community. She was included in XXL's prestigious 2020 Freshman Class and received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, making 2021 a historic year as one of multiple female rappers nominated in that category. In March 2021, she released her second EP Once Upon A Time, a six-track project featuring BJ The Chicago Kid that used fairytale themes to chronicle her journey. She followed with her full-length debut album Samson: The Album in July 2023, which received widespread critical praise.
