Favored Nations is an electronic dance-punk trio formed in Los Angeles, bringing together singer Morgan Phalen (former vocalist of Diamond Nights and featured on Justice's Audio, Video Disco), DJ James Curd (DFA), and guitarist Surahn "Sid" Sidhu (touring guitarist for Empire of the Sun). The band was born through a chance meeting between Curd and Phalen on a night out in Los Angeles, and they later brought Sidhu into the fold to add live instrumentation to their electronic foundation. Their sound combines frenetic, house-infused dance-pop with smooth new wave overtones, creating an energetic fusion that bridges indie rock sensibilities with club-ready production.
The trio's track "The Setup" gained significant exposure through its inclusion in Grand Theft Auto V, helping establish their presence in the electronic music scene. They released several EPs including the Amazon EP in 2014 and the Blame Game EP before culminating in their debut album The Great Unknown in 2015. The album showcased their ability to craft catchy, danceable tracks with standout singles like "Always" and "The Great Unknown," demonstrating their talent for creating accessible yet sophisticated electronic music. The band's international makeup—with members based between California, Australia, and Sweden—reflects their globally-minded approach to modern dance music.
